A year of Ethical Fashion- The big difference

Have you ever bought a shirt from a big name retailer and after the first washing it fits dramatically different?  Or, better yet, you go to fold it and the seams are so off you can't even fold it properly?  (*not that i would fold anything properly...or at all for that matter.).   You do, for the most part, get what you pay for.   It's hard to complain when you pay $4 for a shirt right?

Several years ago I made a change in how I buy clothes.  Even clothes for my kids.  I shop A LOT at thrift stores, estate, and garage sales.  Its amazing how many great things both new and vintage you can find.  Don't get me wrong you can still find me at target perusing all their cute clothes....I just don't buy them as much anymore.

If you do thrift be selective.  Keep your eye out for high quality designer or handmade goods. They are ususally made well and will last.  Don't be afraid to do some minor mending or even take it to a tailor.  It's usually worth it.  The main reason for my switch wasn't as much the frustation at cheaply made clothes, but the fact that they all end up in the trash.  I'm afraid we are burying our future in a mountain of garbage.

The suits and dresses below are mostly from the 40s.  They all came from the same person and were loved.  The details are amazing and beautiful.

I think there is something to be said about the way our Grandmothers dressed.  They may not have had much, but what they had was nice.  It was a big deal to get a nice suit and they were often handmade or made specifically by a dressmaker.  We live in such a throw away, stuffed closet kind of world.  Is it really necessary to have 30 pairs of jeans?  The older I get the more I want to buy staples that will last for a while.

Thrifted Thursdays-Put on your dance pants

This weeks thrifted Thursdays is all about my 80s ladies, the leotard, and high waisted dance pants.  I found these at a garage sale and no lie I was giddy about them.  Especially the first one.  My daughter is already eyeballing it.
The one above needs some big hair with slicked back side wings.  If you can't live without them go check out my etsy shop.
Anyone find any good stuff lately?  I had a major score yesterday.  Can't wait to share it next week!

Thrifted Thursday

It's garage sale season!  I've unloaded everything from my storage locker.  I've got the room.  I'm on the hunt for some big pieces anyways and if I something in the meantime so be it.  Right?  That's fair.

I found all of the macrame and knitting magazines for a quarter a piece at a church garage sale and the vintage stool was found at a thrift store for $8.

Anyone found anything good lately?  I'm heading out of town on a quick girls weekend with my mom and daughter.  I can't wait!  Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Two of my beautiful nieces and one of their friends came over the other night for a little impromptu photo shoot.  It was beyond fun and makes me realize I need to do this more often.  They are such fun girls and they make me feel so young.  It's so much better having real life models than a mannequin to show off my vintage goodies.  I've updated the shop a little and plan on doing more updates soon!  I've got tons of records to list in the record shop too.

My hubs just told me it's going to be 70 tomorrow.  I love the midwest!  Not sure I'll be saying that next week when it's back down to the 30s.  xoxo, Amy

Thrifted Thursday-Life Lately

How come we are so motivated at the start of the New Year?  At the beginning of the month?  I had high hopes of putting up one of those great goals list..."resolutions", that I may never follow.  I still might.  It does feel good to write your goals down even if you don't stick to them.  I haven't been thrifting over the holidays.  Been too busy taking care of sick kids, cleaning, napping, and eating my weight in cookies, pies, cheese, dips and other super healthy foods.

I figured since it was Thursday I would go ahead and do a thrifting post...lucky for me most of the things in this photo were thrifted so I figured it counted.   The couch was thrifted for $70. It was not intended to last...just get us through until we move. Surprisingly we all kind of dig it. Unfortunately it's light enough for my daughter to move. Her new thing is "organizing". Which means rearranging furniture and relocating items all around the house to whatever spot she chose to "organize". It usually ends bad for someone. Either us or her depending on the day.  It's my fault. I'm ok with it. When she grows up it will come in handy I'm sure.

The blanket was thrifted/found...I can't remember which, but its been a staple in our home all year.  It stays in my trunk during the warm months for soccer and baseball practice.  The needlepoint I've had for a while. It's one of my favorites.  You can't see it very well but the end table was also thrifted. It has slots underneath for records.

That's all I got. Hope your Christmas was amazing. Mine was the best.  My kids are at a great age where everything is extremely magical. My husband and I agreed not to get each other gifts.  We just re-did our kitchen floors so that was our gift.  Christmas morning he handed me a box of chocolates.  I looked him square in the eye and said "one of your customers gave you this didn't they"?  He really thought he could get away with it.  I took it to work the next day and we all shared them for breakfast.

If you haven't noticed I changed my banner to Wanderland Vintage (the name of my vintage and record shop).  I got sick of looking at my giant face everytime I logged on here, and I've been wanting to change it for a while.  Trying to find the time to get everything else on my blog fixed up and looking sharp for the New Year.  It's a work in progress so bear with me.  Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, whatever it is you celebrate...and New Year.   xoxo, Amy

Thrifted Thursday

I haven't posted many thrift posts lately and it's certainly not for lack of thrifting.  We have our house on the market...still...and it's a nightmare trying to keep it clean.  So I haven't taken many good photos after my thrift adventures.   Here's a little peak at some of my finds.
That's a full set of Raggedy Ann and Andy sheets, with curtains and 2 bedspreads.  Some tree curtains...because, well...because I couldn't say no, and a few dresses.
some pink snack sets and 2 Club pots.  My mom had Club pots and they bring back such good memories.  I rarely see them, but when I do, I can't resist.  So far I have a couple pink ones, a light blue and now these two!
My son spotted this trampoline and my sister in law has been needing one.  They are crazy expensive brand new and they use it for their pool in the summer.  It's caused numerous fights, a lot of yelling, and is used to threaten them into good behavior.  Probably wasn't a great idea to bring it home first. It is fun though.  And see the pink hula hoop?  Another score.

A melamine serving dish, I have little saucer in the same pattern.  I can't seem to pass up these old vinyl cases.  I have good intentions to paint them or something...just haven't gotten around to it.
These amazing little white dresses for my stinker.
and this one for me!  Anyone find any good stuff lately? I would love to hear, leave a link in the comments so I can check it out!  xoxo, Amy

Thrifted Thursdays

These are some finds from a few weeks ago.  I got the whole lot for $11 bucks and some change.  A couple days later I went back and found two more polaroid cameras.  If you need one message me, I'll be listing them soon!

My daughter said she wanted a basket for her bike and I found one for 50 cents!  I also got the thermos, potholder, holly hobbie pillowcase (I think I had the same one when I was a little girl), 2 pairs of jeans, and that super cute purse that Sammy has been attached to since I got it.  Come to think of it she had it at soccer practice last night stuffed full of toys, along with another purse stuffed full of toys, a book, a crown, a baby, a blanket and snacks.  She packed light.

I thought I would save the best for last with the package of needlepoints.  I am a sucker for stuff like this.  They are almost always totally worth it.  They are usually cheap too, since they've been opened and may not have everything.  Almost all the ones I have found have not only had most of the kit but extra stuff as well.  If you are a crafter these are the best. The one above is almost finished.

Anyone find anything good recently?   I would love to see it.  Leave a link in the comments if you did. And, I apologize for terrible photos.

xoxo,
Amy

Thrifted Thursday-Junk in my Trunk

Literally, had this junk in my trunk for a month!  Sometimes you gotta just let things lie and do other stuff.  Like catch up on Y and R, or snuggle with your kids,  and save the hauling in of your crap for another day...or month.  I couldn't pass up the giant coffee maker.  I mean what if I entertain some coffee addicts?  What if I am just really tired and need a 64 ounce cup?  Plus, it was in the box so it instantly called out my name.  The rest: a cute leather clutch, a little red thermos and some Post Haste paper airplane cards.

On another note, the folks over at Junk Mafia were kind enough to let me call into there Junk in my Trunk radio show on Monday.  It was super fun.  They are awesome folks and love junking as much as I do.  They are great for the Kansas City junking community and are going to be on Picked Off in August.  Can't wait!

We are taking a sick day today.  Went to work and got the call from daycare and must admit I was so happy to pick up my kids early.  We are lounging...watching movies...and hopefully napping soon!

Happy Thursday!
xoxo,
Amy

Thrifted Thursday

A few goodies from an outing last week...
Floral (towel fabric) curtains and squirrel sprinklers. Yes squirrel sprinklers! How could I pass them up? I envision a little spray paint first.  They were $2 a piece.
I think they are pretty amazing.
A big chunky sweater.  They had all their sweaters half off, so although I didn't need another...I couldn't pass it up.
A Diane Von Furstenberg embroidered carpet bag.
Some more floral curtains.  I was thinking they might make a great maxi skirt.
I usually avoid new(ish) things, but I couldn't pass up these kicks.  They are practically brand new.

What good things did you find, or maybe I should ask...what found you?

xoxo,
Amy
