I've been tagged in a game by Shelley from Crazy Wonderful, and thought it would be fun to join in.

Eleven is the magic number here. Answer eleven questions, tag eleven other bloggers (or ask everyone to play), and come up with eleven different questions to ask them.

1) If you could go back in time and change one thing what would it be?

Can I change two? I wouldn't have quit dance...and I would change my major in college and go for art and graphic design instead of marketing and business. To any young girls out there that read this blog...follow your dreams. Yes, money is important so you can feed yourself and your family if you have one, however quality of life is very imporant too. I have been just as happy (if not happier) broke...then when I've had plenty.

2) What is your favorite trend in decorating?

I have always been into kitsch and vintage. Most of my furniture and decor has been found at thrift stores, was in the family, or found on the curb. The first thing we are going to do when we move is buy a real grown up comfy couch. You know, a new one from the couch store!

I adore Thompson Family Blog. She is one of my all time favorites.

3) What is your reoccurring dream?

Wow, I had night terrors when I was little and moonlighted as a sleepwalker (or at least that's what they told me). I am fearful my kids may have them too.

Very weird, but when I was young I had terrifying dreams. I had a reoccuring dream of the stations of the cross and I always saw my dad's face in Jesus. It was horrifying. They went away and never lasted long.

I also had a recurring dream that a guy with a knife came into my gymnastics class. We would all be sitting on the beam when he approached us one at a time. Some girls ran, some didn't. I would run, and I always woke up when I reached the back door of the gym.

5) Do you have a secret talent?

I am very good at making my friends pee their pants. It's a gift, and I take it very seriously. It helps that I have no shame and don't embarrass easily.

Quit my day job and open a shop. It would consist of an arts and craft studio/woodworking shop, and we would sell vintage clothes, housewares and records...and of course fresh donuts and hot coffee....and that's all I would need. And, a spot for my rascals...I like to keep them in tow.

9) What's a TV show you're embarrassed to admit you watch?

Young and the Restless! I'm really not embarrassed about it...but I do get slack for it. My hubs and I watch it every night...or we'll watch a marathon in one sitting. That's right. Y and R baby. And, since I know you are wondering, Victor-the mustache Newman and Nikki are almost back together for the 329th time. Aaahhhh, sweet love.

Gotye-Somebody that I used to know....with Kimbra. I am obsessed.

11) What have you said to get out of a speeding ticket?

I've only gotten out of one ticket in my life. It was about 3am and I was eating Taco Bell while driving. Totally let me off. I have tried crying before...but that didn't work. I have however gotten two friends out of tickets. I am all about taking one for the team.

I found this treasure on the curb. I really need to look into buying an old truck. I drive a Honda, and the Honda shows zero love for dumpster diving. I had a trunk full of groceries, two kids strapped into car seats (they were mine, so no worries), and a front seat full of clutter from the week before. If I had a truck I would have left with two paintings, an end table, and maybe two chairs. (raising fist in air in fury)

Midwest weather. One day it's 60 degrees, the next it's 20 and frigid. I love my winters. But this winter we have had no good snow storms. None. I am over it, bring me spring so I can dust off my bike and start riding again.

Happy Friday! It's the third annual Mom's weekend. My besties come up from Wichita and we get embarrassingly stupid. One of the joys of growing older...is having absolutely no shame. Someone will pee their pants by nights end tomorrow. I can't wait!

Sparkle Shoes

Supplies needed:

spray paint

glitter

glue

paint brush

1. I stuffed tissue on the inside and taped around the edges. Spray away.

2. Paint glue where you want the glitter and sprinkle you sparkle

Much better with sparkle.

Thrifting 101:Thriting for the Home tips from Amber from The Owl's Den

Amber is over from The Owl's Den, a blog easy to fall in love with. I adore her style and I think we are kindred spirits when it comes to thrift, and judging by her food posts, we also share a love for good food. She doesn't know this but I went to grade school with her doppelganger who was just as cute as she is. After reading the post, I thought it fit so perfectly with my Thrifting 101 series I had to add it. I'll let her tell the rest...

Hi Green Eggs and Hamm followers I’m Amber from The Owl’s Den and I’m so excited to be writing a guest post for my thrifting idol. As you can already tell, I love thrifting particularly for furniture and décor for my apartment. In fact, most of my living room consists of thrift store finds with each piece costing around $10. However, just like shopping thrift stores for clothing there are things to look for when buying furniture, so here are my top ten tips when shopping thrift store for your home.

1. Look At The Displays

Half the time that golden piece is displaying a tacky lamps or other items. This is actually how I found my small credenza. Check out the item for a price tag and if you don’t see one simply ask how much. Most of the time if they do not want to sell the item there will be a sign letting you know it is display only.

2. Don’t Dismiss Ugly Things

If the piece has great bone structure but has an ugly paint job or fabric don’t dismiss it as junk. If you have the time and resources to fix it up then get it! This is great for D.I.Y projects and it helps to bring more of your personality into the room.

3. Smell It First

Sounds odd but just like buying clothing be sure the piece does not smell bad. This is real important for furniture made from solid wood. If there is any evidence of the item being in a smoker’s house chances are when the wood naturally expands that smell will be more potent.

4. Bring Measuring Tape

There are obvious items that you do not have to measure but if you are trying to fit things through doors or placing them in between spaces, it is important to measure before buying. Consider measuring the height and depth of the item too. A vintage side table might be too short to use as a nightstand or the depth of that retro credenza may not be big enough to hold your television or game system on top. Keeping a note pad with original measurements helps keep from getting height and width numbers mixed up.

5. Sit On It

Just like any furniture store, you want to make sure the chair or sofa will work for you. Something that you think looks great may sit way to low to the ground or is too big to sit in. Even if you plan to get it reupholstered, you do not want to spend that kind of money on a piece that is awkward to sit or get up in.

6. Know Your Thrift Stores

Certain thrift stores cater to certain types of items. Most stores do carry furniture and décor but some have more variety and greater prices compared to others. It is important to figure which ones do and do not carry the style you want so you can use it to your advantage. This makes searching for a certain piece of furniture a bit easier.

7. It’s Okay To Replace Things

When it comes to vintage decor and furniture sometimes the frames and knobs can be plain tacky. If it is worth the cost and the piece can easily be removed buy a new frame or knobs for it. You can always check out the dollar store for a wooden frame or updated knobs at a lower cost.

8. It’s Okay To Buy New

Thrift stores sometimes carry newer items (marked down from popular stores) but no need to feel guilty for buying new. When you find something with the sticker price still on it that just makes it more exciting that you found the item at such a great deal and condition. You are not turning your back on the thrifting world if you buy it unused.

9. Come In The Right Vehicle

If you’re just looking for small home décor then driving in a small car is fine but when you are searching for bigger pieces make sure you have a vehicle that you can carry it home plus the proper straps to hold it down on its voyage to your house. We brought ol’ Red with us when I was looking for items in the bedroom and we lucked out and found an antique dresser. Also see if they offer delivery, this came in handy when I underestimated the size of my small credenza and my tiny car.

10. Don’t Be Discouraged

Just like any shopping adventure don’t get discouraged if you don’t come home with your golden piece. Depending on what state your from and the atmosphere of the store certain items are known to be popular than most. As far as I noticed in the south not too many thrift stores know how popular Danish Modern is so you don’t stumble upon it too often and when you do it is at a steal. Keep looking and revisit your favorite thrift stores and you’ll eventually stumble upon your dream item.

It may seem a bit scary (don’t get me started on my phobia of buying thrift store couches) but after buying great solid pieces at a fraction of these newer “pressured wood” items it makes it hard to go back. I hope these tips help you overcome any fears and help you with your next budget make over or furnishing your first apartment. So go out and thrift on my friends!

Yes, Yes, and Yes...please

Last year I found the perfect high waisted suits and waited too long thinking I would catch a sale. Instead, the suits were gone in weeks. I never found anything I liked and ended up wearing my old suit. Maybe this is the motivation I need to get in shape. That's logical right? Like I won't eat donuts by the dozen if this is waiting for me? Right.

Sunday Smoothies

Super easy Peanut Butter, Chocolate, Banana smoothie.

What you need:

2 bananas

a handful of almonds

1/4-1/2 cup of peanut butter

1/2 cup of chocolate soy milk

ice-a couple handfuls

blend together, enjoy!

DIY Dookie Bracelets

Growing up in the eighties I listened to more gangster rap and hip hop than any other music. My 5 year old's favorite song is Brass Monkey by the Beastie Boys. I kind of fear the day when they find my stash of tapes and cd's. Yes tapes...as in cassette tapes. Not eight tracks (although I am old enough to rememer those too).

Anyways, the dookie bracelet is soft, comfy, and super easy to make. The ones below are from one of my favorite etsy shops, NakiMuli. She is super bad and I want to buy every single pair of leggings she has in her shop.

Supplies:

Fabric scraps: the crazier the design, the better

sewing machine or needle and thread

scissors

stuffing

1. Cut a piece of scrap fabric approximately 11" x 4" (give or take depending on your wrist)

2. Fold over one edge and stitch so you have a finished edge.

3. Fold over lengthwise with right sides together and stitch along outer edge leaving one end open.

4. Turn fabric right side out.

5. Grab your stuffing and fill it up.

6. Put the unfinished end inside the finished end and stitch closed either by hand or machine. I did both and like the way hand stitching turned out better.

They really do. I think they see me coming and poke their little collars and crazy fabric out of the racks and say "pick me pick me"! This is my booty from last weeks trip to thrift.

Yes, it's velvet and it's lovely, and best of all...it actually fits me!

see the pleats by the waist? Yes! Oh, and those are little hearts in the print.

Some eighties fab with side buttons.

I've had a couple of these "Jenny" label dresses and they have never disappointed. This one is a bit small and will probably end up in the shop.

It' s not a real thrift if I don't find something for my girl.

Now it's time to get to work. I have some major updates to tend to!

I am a little crankypants. Started a cleanse that requires me to give up caffeine for 16 days. I give myself until the weekend before I snap. I almost drop kicked a co-worker who was flaunting his soda. Thinking this whole cleanse thing was a pretty stupid idea. After the first day I gained a pound. WTF? Who gains weight on a cleanse?

Girls Night Out

Yup, girls night out and I had to swing into the thrift store for quick minute. It was on the way to the bar, and I was ALONE! It's been a long week. My friend who works there could see it on my face. She has 4 kids and knows mine fairly well. She reminded me to soak up the quietness and enjoy my time. I did.

Bedtime at my house has been a nightmare. My kids are nightowls and some nights it's 10:00 (or later) before they finally give in and fall asleep.

Secretly, I went with the hopes that my husband would get the kids to bed and I would just come home instead. He did. My daughter was asleep by 7, my son by 8. Seriously? Beyond unfair. You mothers understand. We struggle every night and our husbands swoop in and the kids finally behave when we aren't there. Not even right. I went out anyways...my girls are good for the soul and I needed a break....and a beer...and a shot...and another beer.

I did score a few super finds though before I made my way out!

Hi! I'm Molly Magill from smmidge and so happy to be guest posting for Green Eggs and Hamm today! Like GEH, smmidge covers many lifestyle topics but today we are talking style. I came across this shot of a sweatshirt with a party skirt and I couldn't get it out of my mind. I love yellow and gray together, and how fun it is to dress down fancy fabrics or pieces, especially if you are like me and live a very casual life. So I grabbed my silk taffeta skirt. . . yes I have had this one for a while, and no I haven't worn it that much. . . (it also just happens to be the same lovely yellow!) and the closest thing I have to sweatshirt and I was ready. I could have been off to a party, a lunch, a shower, work, or a dinner date. Insert moment and this idea will bring a little unexpected pizzazz! Mix it up and have fun! Thanks again to Amy and Green Eggs and Hamm for having me! xx - m.m.

Thrifting 101-Lesson #2 Shoes

Shoes shoes shoes! Thinking outside or better yet...inside the (shoe) box.

I have been thrifting for years and until recently never looked at shoes. I had these preconceived notions of grossness, and the chances of them having my size were slim to none (I wear a size 12...and before you go and judge my gigantor feet please keep in mind I am over 6 feet tall...now you can judge my giganticness in whole).

Back to shoes. I love them. LOVE THEM. My size is available at Nordstrom and Payless and that's pretty much it...with the exception of online. It all started with wanting some loafers and oxfords. I posted on them a while back, you can revisit it here and here. One day I thought...why not look in the men's shoes?

The selections are much smaller and neater, and I cannot tell you how many Allen Edmond's, Dr. Martens and Bass shoes I see there. All three are so on trend right now, but fairly expensive retail. So at least scope it out for your men/man or yourself and do something fun with them!

Like this: add some fancy shoestrings.

These were $8.98. I added lace shoestrings and lace to the heel. When I get bored I'm thinking gold spray paint and glitter!

The possibilites are endless!

If you have children you have even more of a reason to look at kids shoes. My kids can grow out of shoes in 3 months. Even worse, they can tear up a pair of shoes in a matter of minutes given the right conditions. These are some of the shoes I have found for my own stinkers this past year.

Seriously? Could you ever pass up Minnetonka Mocassins?

Converse are great for boys and girls. Those black ones will be washed and put away for my daughter.

Tap shoes...I had a lapse in good judgement...but she sure does like them.

Bottom line: Don't forget the shoes! Have an idea of the style you are after. It makes it less daunting and easier to scan the racks. Look for the shape and style first and think outside the box. I have yet to pay over $10 a pair. Kids shoes are typically $2-$5. If you need inspiration go to Pinterest. Nuff said.

Luck in the New Year

It is said that if you eat black eyed peas on New Year's day it will be bring you luck throughout the year. I am not superstitious and don't believe in luck. I do however love black eyed peas. Below are two super easy recipes that involves mostly opening cans. My dad, who got me started on the whole black eyed peas business would be mortified that I used canned peas. I always do, and he always cringes when I tell him. If you want to soak your beans overnight go for it. I choose the easy way.

Black eyed peas

*Disclaimer: there are no rights or wrongs! I have made this before with nothing but peas, rotel and diced ham. I don't measure so bare with me.

What I used today

1 can black eyed peas
1 can butter beans
1 can navy beans
1 can rotel
1/2 a can of corn ( I never use corn, I just had some extra so I threw it in)
1 can tex mex style diced tomatoes
1 small onion chopped
2 cloves garlic chopped
3 small sweet peppers chopped
1 pat butter
enough olive oil to cover bottom of saucepan
1 ham hock-leftover from Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner (you can also use diced ham)
pepper to taste
a dash of season salt
a dash of celery salt
hot sauce (optional)

1. throw in your pat of butter and olive oil in a large pan

2. get your pan hot enough so the butter is sizzling

3. put in your onion, garlic, peppers (or any other veggies you choose to use) and cook until they soften or your onion turns opaque.

4. add your ham hock and turn it a couple of times (kind of like braising a piece of meat before slow cooking)

5. open all your cans and throw 'em in the pan.

6. bring it to a boil then turn the heat down to low and simmer for about an hour.

7. taste and season to your hearts desire

make yourself some easy box corn bread muffins and add some shredded cheese to the batter! Yum.

Next up: Cowboy Cavier

*disclaimer - I did not use butter beans even though it's in the picture! And again, no rights or wrongs. Add what you like and make it your own.

1 can black eyed peas
1 can corn
1 can rotel
1 can black beans
1 small onion chopped
1 small garlic clove chopped
3 small sweet peppers chopped
a few slices pickled jalapeno peppers chopped (I only add this to my bowl..the rest of the family can't hang)
a bunch of chopped cilantro (I add this as I eat it, or else it won't last very long. If you are making it for a party go ahead and add it) tear off a handful and chop it up- depending on how well you like cilantro.
1/4-1/2 cup italian dressing

Mix it all together and put it in the fridge for a couple hours. Eat with scoops tortilla chips. Great delivery system. Almost as good as using a spoon.

This is seriously so good. My brother in law made it last summer and I can't get enough! I found the actual recipe here. It differs, but like I said, I'm not big on measuring!

I Hope everyone brought in the New Year right. I went to dinner with a college friend and hit the casinos. I don't think it counts if you don't gamble though! Plus, getting home at 10:30 reassures me I am completely lame. Anyways, I don't know about you but I am stoked about the New Year.

I am finally going to take the Dream Job E-Course from Red Velvet. I opened my Etsy shop a year ago (a goal of mine for 2011), but now it's time to buckle down and get serious.
I ordered the Handmadeology 2.0 Bookkeeping Spreadsheet so I can be legit.
I have made my lists, wrote down my goals, and am ready to get busy.
I'm going to start a new series called Thrifting 101. I can't wait to share my knowledge and some of the tricks I've learned over the many, many years of thrifting. I hope you enjoy it!

It's always been hard for me to use outside sources for help. I majored in Marketing and always feel like I should do this stuff myself (ie. spreadsheets, marketing, promoting). Like, I know what needs to be done and have visions of doing it, but never seem to get it together. Over the years (especially this last year) I have learned to let go of some of the control and look to real professionals who are doing it now. It reminds of working out now...vs. working out in college. It's a whole lot easier with a coach yelling profanities and chasing me around with a bullhorn. I need that...but for business. Wish me luck!

Thrifting 101

If you didn't already know...I thrift often. Very often. With the New Year around the corner I thought it was the perfect time to start a new series. Thrifting 101. I'm going to share the ins and outs and some secrets to finding the gems in what can seem like a pile of junk! In the process I am going to try to get over my phobia of outfit posts.

Lesson 1. Find your spot!

I think one key to finding the good stuff is to find your spot. Go often and when you find a good spot, stick with it. The people get to know you and are willing to work with you on merchandise that may need fixed. Don't be scared to ask for a discount for merchandise that has stains (most can be removed), missing buttons, evens tears and rips. Some stores don't intend on putting out merchandise that is damaged so when it's overlooked and gets to the sales floor they would rather sell it for a fraction of the price than trash it (and yes most thrift stores do compact unsellable merchandise). They usually discount it 50% it not more, but don't get mad if they say no. It is thrift after all!

One of my favorite stores won't let you buy merchandise that doesn't have tags. Period. They send it to the back to be re-priced and re-stocked. I have developed a rapore with most of the girls there now, and a couple managers. Finally, these relationships are paying off, and they get me prices while I wait. Always be nice, and come back often. A friendly face who visits often matters to any business!

Now on to some of my favorite pieces from this past fall.

Thriftin ain't easy

I love the part where you thrift, where every aisle has lots of surprises...but then you have to carry it in the house, sort it, log it, wash it, fix it, photograph it, measure it, list it, tag it, and then fingers crossed ship it. This is what I have been working through this week. And NONE of that other stuff has been done. My trunk is full of more stuff, including a couple suitcases!

there were a few more bags here...but I had already sifted through it.

I found some lovely things. I did a major shop update about a month ago here. My favorites would have to be the dresses. I am a t-shirt and sweats kind of girl but this past year I have fallen in love with how easy it is to throw on a dress.

I have been working on the style of my blog for awhile and hadn't found any thing that I really love. I downloaded the Strawberry Shortcake blog template from Pugly Pixel and used Amy Morby's rad downloads to dress it up. I have a new header coming soon that Jess that IRockSoWhat is designing. I'm pretty stoked about it!

Looking forward to some extra time off over the holidays. I stayed home this morning and cleaned my filthy house. My lovely daughter just looked at me typing this and proceeded to spit her candy cane out on the clean floor and said "I don't wike dis"....now she is eating another one. Not sure why I bother!

This time of year I kind of let myself go. I get unorganized, I eat more, I slack off, I go to bed earlier, I hit snooze more. I think it's because we all get so busy this time of year. Knowing that the New Year is around the corner it excites me to get back on track. I also get really excited at the thought of a new planner. It's the little things. Mine just arrived in the mail with a couple extra goodies.

I found everything at The Hach after intense searching for the just the right planner. It's funny how happy a new planner makes me. It's going to be a great 2012!

This may be a couple of days late...but if you still have leftover turkey this is a casserole that won't disappoint. It's Hot ~~Chicken~~ Turkey Salad. I had it the first time at my cousin's Shelley's (from Crazy Wonderful) baby shower. Her dear friend and hostess with the mostest Katherine who blogs over at Harper and Ollie's House introduced me to it and it is delish!

1. I am not a morning person. I am however when I don't have to work.

2. I love staying up late crafting and sewing when everyone else is sleeping.

3. I usually sleep with a pillow on my head and the heaviest comforter I can find. I hope this doesn't lead to early balding.

4. I love handmade things and vintage (not really a surprise) and dream of someday having a studio or warehouse space I can open to the public for sales, craft nights, etc.

5. I can eat sweets in mass quantities, not candy, but things like donuts, chocolate, filled apple pies, cinnamon rolls...

6. I badly want a vintage upholstered floral couch.

7. I love playing sports but only enjoy watching them when someone I know is playing.

8. I love comedy and actions movies...and can't bear to watch sappy love stories, like nails on a chalkboard.

This is a day late...but truly something I could never, ever, tire of. This sign really should have my name on it.

This is my favorite thrift store and a block away from work. I've spent more lunches here than anywhere else.

This is my favorite thrift by the house. Across the street there is one as well...and maybe another one about 1/2 mile down. I live a mile from from thrift row, and I love it!

I thrift way too often, sometimes multiple times a week. I have a little Etsy shop where I sell some of my wares because if I didn't, you would see me on hoarders. I truly love everything I buy, so thankfully I get just as must joy sharing those goodies with others. I can't not thrift. I've been doing it forever, it's my zen.

Here are some of my own personal favorite treasures...

I found this Bambi needlepoint for $7 and it has a note on the back. It's from 1985 and says "to Derek, Love Aunt Maxine and Aunt Lucine". I treasure it and have it in my kids room.

are you getting the picture? I can't wait to have a bigger house with a giant wall to display all my beautiful needlepoints. I have almost all of my beloved Grandmother's needlepoints in my basement and I hope someday my grandchildren will treasure them as much as I do.

And dishes? I have a set that matches this vase in a box in my basement and can't wait to have more room to display/use the whole thing.

teacups and saucers are also a weakness.

as are fire king mugs. Unfortunately a lot have been broken over the years. The nice thing about thrift is that you can never be too disappointed with breakage. My kids have broken 3 out of 4 of my jade cereal bowls.

I am craving a new house. Badly! A place where all my tchotchkies have a home. A place where we no longer have to share one bathroom. A place for the hubs to go and watch his games and a place for me to craft. I would say a place for the kids to have their own space, but who am I kidding...the whole house is their space and I believe will be until they are teens and retreat to their rooms. I will take it while I can, because having them at my feet won't last forever.

30 Days Hath November What I love about my Job

I've held down a variety of jobs through highschool and college, some make momma proud, some maybe not so much. Babysitting, Taco Tico, Taco Bell (I like mexican food), waiting tables at a variety of restaurants, selling cars, selling candles out of my trunk, selling marketing for people with patents, and my current job...still selling.

I am used to totally inappropriate behavior and currently work for a real professional establishment, a no shenanigans type of place. So these new pranks I am not used to. I came back from lunch the other day and every item on my desk was taped down. EVERYTHING. The change, my earrings (I'm on the phone all day), my phone, my mouse, my ruler, my pen, my notepad...and more. Here is a glimpse of the nice things that happen to me.

The sleeves on my sweater were tied with embroidery thread...that matched my sweater. They love me, they really really, love me. What do you enjoy about your job?

I found the cords in navy! I am on Anthro's list so they send me a birthday discount every year. I threw mine away after it expired (end of September) since I never used it. When I got to the checkout I asked the lady nicely if they honor them after the expiration date. They happily looked up my name in the computer and took off 15% of my total purchase. Don't ever be afraid to ask...stores like Nordstrom and Anthropologie are notorious for wonderful customer service. They treat their customers like gold. I ended up getting both pairs that once were $128 each, for a total of $82. And these pants are quality, they will last for years. I am pretty excited since pants are hard to find for me. And, no I did not buy a planner.

I have no idea exactly what I was doing, but more than likely mourning the end of my maternity leave and returning to work. Here is my stepdaughter holding her baby sister in September of 2008.

And here is same tiny baby just 5 months later. I admit...I teared up looking at these.

She bears a tiny resemblance to the well known michelin man in this photo. Oh how I miss those rolls!

I want another. With the excpetion of gaining massive weight...late nights...no sleep, and being 37.

Day 4. A friend I adore.

This post is not fair. I adore all my friends, and had a difficult time not putting 100 pictures in this post of my dearest and closest. I have the best friends in the entire world. No doubt. I totally win in the friend department. I have had the same crew for the past twenty years. My crew has grown exponentially over the years. As we have gotten older they have become family, so it's not just my friends, but the little sisters, the moms, the aunts, you get the picture. When it comes to my girls...the more the merrier is the motto.

My friends don't judge me, they are low maintenance, we can go months without talking and pick up right where we left off, they make me pee my pants, and pee their pants right along with me. But the two that have been around for the longest, and the two that have gotten in the most trouble with me are these two crazy ones.

This was "mom's" weekend two years ago. We do it every year. We are in Mrs. Mustacheo's "shaggin wagon". She has 5 kids, so she rides dirty...in a conversion van. And no doubt, we take it out. The one on the right may or may not have flashed the parking attendant for free parking. We were a little disappointed to find out she only saved us $2. But, $2 saved is a shot earned. Any of us would have done it, but she wanted shotgun and is way more qualified. With shotgun comes responsibilities. And when you are a mom, your chances to party and have a good time are very limited, so you do what you gotta do.

I went to college with them both. The one on the right was my roomie and Bff in junior college. The one on the left I met when I moved to KC. I played basketball with them both and they were both a pretty big deal. One was the leading 3 point shooter in the city in highschool, and the other is in the hall of fame at Avila University, I'm pretty sure they were both homecoming queens too, and now they think they are bff's. Whatevs.

We get older, but nothing really changes.

This was almost twenty years ago. Yes, we were smoking, and yes we had fake nails. We also put on makeup before each and every home game...and some away games.

I love them dearly, I adore them, they are stuck with me through life. We know way too much about each other to have it any other way. Muah!

30 Days Hath November day #3 and a little DIY

Something I never leave the house without...

I carry crap. I carry lots of crap. I take it with me daily. This pile of stuff is my normal haul to work. My purse (full of crap), my work planner, my personal planner, my laptop, and whatever project I am working on. If I don't feel like thrifting over lunch I have my "stuff" to work on.

My work planner. A little spray adhesive and floral fabric makes everything better.

The other side.

This bag I made from an old vintage towel (another thing I collect) and is the perfect thing to carry all my stuff. The great thing about these bags is that they can hold 3 gallons of milk. Yes, 3 gallons. The thicker the towel, and the more you reinforce the stitching, the more crap you can hold.

Want to make one? You can use one of those "recycle" bags from the grocery store as a make shift pattern for the width/length/and sides. The great thing about these is that they don't need to be perfect. Actually they are far from it. I purposely stitch them on the outside of the right sides because I think that imperfection is best with these.

I made this one last weekend. They are super easy.

Take one or two old towels, a bag you like the size of (I used the one I bought from the grocery store for $1).

I folded it in half and then creased the bottom in two spots (to make a flat bottom) and stitched across twice (see below).

I am a lazy crafter so this was in lieu of cutting a bottom piece. I stitched on the outside because I like how it looks with these old towels.

I used the pink towel for the sides so cut two pieces of your side fabric and stitch to the sides and the bottom. Think of sewing in a U shape.

For the straps cut two long pieces and stitch the ends to the outside. If you want it to be super heavy duty, cut 4 pieces and stitch the straps to both the inside and outside. I always reinforce the straps and stitch not only the outside but an X pattern in the middle of the where the strap meets the bag.

And that's it! If you make one I would LOVE to see it!

Has anyone seen this? The 30 day hath November challenge. Unfortunately for me today was the self portrait. I am keepin' it real. I called in sick to work, got the kiddos off to school, then I went back to sleep until noon. And then napped off and on until I had to pick them up. I have been fighting a killer sinus infection for two weeks and couldn't take it any longer.

I have to pretty much strap this one down to get a pic. Mickey Mouse, minus the hat, which is lost...for the second time. We lost it the first time around when my son wore this costume. It turned up at my mom's work the next day. Here we are two years later and it's lost again.

they hit up this house 3 times. It's their grandparents. This neighborhood gives out king size candy bars. Needless to say we drive over there for the festivities. The two lucky trick or treaters we had got about a 1/2 bag of candy a piece (as in those extra large bags). That's the benefits of being the sole trick or treaters in our hood.

Now onto the annual adult Halloween party...these are the pics that made the cut.

the ghostbuster was my favorite costume of the night. Plus the girl is crafty and made it herself, which automatically gets bonus points in my book. Plus #2, she has an etsy shop and makes awesome stuff with her husband like this. I want it badly. Onto the Halloween debauchery...

The one on the right always has the best costumes. She prepares...she takes time to perfect her outfit. The one on the left throws crap together last minute, sends her kids to the grandparents house and takes a 30 minute nap.

and then there are always THESE GIRLS...you know who you are. But I do love these girls, because they are my girls! My weekend at the lake girls, my always a good time girls. Love them!

And then there is this girl. One of my very best girls. She would murder me if she knew I put this on here, but lucky for me, she doesn't read this! This is the kind of friend who will make you pee your pants in public from laughing so hard. And than pee a little more because you cannot stop laughing. That girl. I love that girl! Hope your Halloween was pee your pants kind of fun too!

DIY Animal Hoods

Has anyone seen these hoods? I am gaga for them. I want every single one. Did you hear me? Every single one.

I tried my hand at making my own cheap knock off. Yes cheap, as in looks as cheap as it feels. But oh, they turned out so cute. Cheap and cute. I still want a Spirit hood and imagine it feels like silk and real fur all mixed together (I do believe theirs are acrylic though...but probably high quality acrylic and not the sale bin at Joann's).

All you need is: a couple hours, preferably kid free because they will interrupt you a lot and want you to make other things instead...put the cat out too because she will sit on whatever you are trying to work on, and a room you are OK with destroying because it will get super messy.

Supplies needed:

felt (or any other easy to sew material...I used felt on the kids and thrifted polyester on mine because I new it wouldn't bunch up with the fur)

fur and lining 1/2 yard to 1 yard of each (I had a ton leftover)

felt or any fabric for embellishments

needle

thread

scissors

pins

sewing machine

hooded sweatshirt - the size of the person you are making it for.

You can see I changed up my lining. I really wanted to use this fabric but didn't have enough.

Simply trace the hoodie part and at the nape (where it would sit around your shoulders) cut in a few inches and then continue to cut all the way down the length of the sweatshirt in a straight line to the bottom of your sweatshirt sleeve. This should give you an accurate spot for little pockets. You could do it another easy way too...measure. I don't like to measure though.

This is what it should like.

Your pieces will include:

2 pieces each of the lining and fur in the shape of your hood.

4 pieces of fur in the shape of ears (round for bears, triangles for cats and so on).

And 2 smaller pieces of felt or lining fabric for the inside embellishment of ears.

2 pieces of the fur and 2 pieces of lining for the pockets.

If you want to add paws...or little triangles for nails cut duplicates as well.

add your paws or nails to the bottom of the right side of lining.

add the felt to the inside of your ears (on the fur side) and stitch together the pockets...lining + fur right sides together.

stitch the back side of the hood only of both lining and fur right sides together.

after adding your embellishments stich ears right sides together.

cut any excess fabric on the outside of stitches.

turn everything right side out.

pin ears on the fur and stitch them in place. Also add pockets to bottom of "sleeve" (lining side facing fur) and stitch the sides and bottom only.

Pin right sides of lining and fur together and stitch everywhere EXCEPT back of hood (neck). This is where you will pull everything through. I left about a 12 inch opening to make it easy. Once everything is pulled through stitch the back of the hood shut.

bottom part. Pockets are on the other side.

Wear it wrapped around like a scarf.

Or draped around you shoulders and stick your hands in the pockets. Have fun. If you make one I would love to see it!

I had to share this. It's an old video...but I adore it. If you haven't checked out the Advanced Style blog, you must. These women are insane with style and being themselves. I aspire to have this kind of confidence. The older I get the more confident I am and the less I worry about what others think. I have been obsessed with vintage throughout my life but until just recently have I fully felt confident enough to wear most of my finds. It helps that my hubsand loves it. I must say, it's very gratifying...even if I get made fun of at work for wearing things that probably belong in 80s Meg Ryan movies, and maybe Dolly Partons 9-5. Enjoy!

DIY Braided Sweatshirt

I added some buttons at the cuff at the last under and over. I also turned this inside out because there was a stain on the front.

Some goodies from the weekend...

Some vintage purses...some nicer than others. The beaded one on the bottom was free. Smells of mildew. Going to see if I can get rid of that smell (suggestions welcome). The sign says "Save water, shower with your steady". The glasses are 80s Liz Claiborne and remind me of my own Sally Jesse Raphael's from grade school. Remember the red ones? The hat is beautiful and bought more for eye candy and inspiration than anything else. Also grabbed a little mirror and some feathers.

This box is full of vintage jewelry pieces and trinkets. I have a future project in mind for them.

Aren't these dolls sweet? I love the one on the right especially. The one on the left was in our possession for about 5 minutes before the little one disrobed it. All the babies in my house stay naked. I think they are easier to draw on that way. Anyone find anything good this week?

DIY Woven Sweatshirt

Thanks to Pinterest and the internet, crafters will never be without projects. I saw this shirt and wanted to do one of my own.

Then, I saw A is for Ampersand make one of her own out of two sweatshirts. She made it look super easy so it motivated me to try. And, I just happened to find some sweatshirts at thrift, so that was a bonus.
Easy = Awesome.

What you need: two sweatshirts, pins, a ruler or good eyeball, sewing machine, not sidewalk chalk...maybe regular chalk though.

I cut two inch strips vertically stopping before the ribbing at the bottom and the seams at the top. Next, turn you sweatshirt inside out if you haven't already.

After cutting two inch wide strips out of your second sweatshirt weave them in and pin at the sides. Stitch the sides and cut off any excess strips. And you're done!

It would probably look much cuter, styled...but sometimes a girl simply doesn't have the energy. I'm keepin it real.

I also made one for my angel. Instead of cutting straight up and down, I went across and used scalloped edges.

see the scalloped edges. I didn't measure this one...I just eyeballed it.

Then I tore strips of this scrap cotton (it was an old sheet), and sewed the strips across the bottom. Don't forget to turn it inside out to work in the strips of fabric!

Weave them through

Then sew the strips at the top.

Pardon the Mess

I chose a really bad time to try to change my blog! I am working on some things and trying to make it a little prettier, but have to take a break mid construction. There is queso to be made...and a sand volleyball game tonight (I am not excited about it at all). I am also recovering from the Tour de BBQ.

That's my brother. He talked me into it. I will say, it was most fun, and we are planning on doing it again 2012. So much fun, it was almost worth waking up at 5:30am the past couple months to train. Almost. Happy weekend homies!

Some weeks are better than others

Thursday I went to my lunch hour thrift store and walked away with a $3 skirt for a coworker and a scarf. Friday I went to the same thrift store and walked out with 4 designer bags, a designer dress, and a bag full of vintage fabric, vintage baby bedding, a bright red vintage vinyl filofax, amongst other things...all for $35. You may want to sit down.

This is a Bottega Veneta bag. If you aren't familiar with this line check out the new line here to get an idea of this score. Big. Score. For reals. I have been going back and forth on whether or not to keep it or sell it. It's been a tough choice. I do this not just for fun...but let's face it, for additional income as well. And, I have dreams of moving and not sharing one bathroom with my family any longer...so I think parting with it has won over. I will be sad to see it go though.

This caught my eye as I was schlepping my goods to the checkout. I didn't try it on...I didn't have time. I had exactly 10 minutes left in my lunch hour (thank God work is about 3 minutes away). I snagged it. All the dresses at this store are $6. When I was checking out the lady saw that it was an Oscar de la Renta and asked someone to double check on the price. I thought no way were they gonna let me have it for $6. Sure enough they came back and confirmed the price. I found this online vintage shop with a lot more.

* If you happen to see a couple good finds like this chances are there are quite a few more. Whether someone donated a lot of their things or perhaps they came from an estate. It's totally worth a good walk through to make sure you aren't missing a score.

*Go often. I go to this same store a lot. I can walk through and see the new stuff quickly. It's very organized and extra clean. By going often you can save time and spot the good stuff.

My baby turns 3...

My baby turned 3 on the 9th. She doesn't call it her birthday. It's her "Happy Birthday". And this is how it sounds coming out of her mouth "it my AAAPppy Birthday Maw Maw". That's her new name for me. Or, same name, different pronunciation. All she wanted for her birthday was "prinkles" (as she put her hand out mimicking putting sprinkles on something).

Sammy you are as independent as ever. If I threw you the keys to the car you would grab your "umbellllla" and your "batpack" and maybe your "lunchbox" and head for the drivers seat. Your favorite place to go is the grocery store. It's also your favorite place to have a meltdown if I don't buy you your desired "tandy". You went to the mall for a girls day with me and Grandma and when speaking of your big day out, you refer to shopping at the mall as "we ent to da goshery sto". You dress how you want. Today you wore a mexican style embroidered shirt 5 sizes too big, a red plaid skirt (also embroidered), a white with yellow cherries short sleeve hoodie and your sandals. You will wear dressy dresses with your nike hightops, and love to wear your "pincess cown". You like ice packs and "band babes", even if you aren't really hurt...and have been know to wear them smackdab in the middle of your forehead for days on end for no apparent reason...at all. You get into my makeup no matter where or how high I hide it.

Even though you are as stubborn as your father and strong as an ox you are still my precious little angel. You wake up every morning full of sunshine and happiness. I love you bigger than "outer pace". You are my superstar and you will do very big things someday.

My birthday is tomorrow...I have been setting some goals and contemplating whether or not to share them. I always feel weird (it's probably fear) sharing my own goals, but love reading everyone elses. When I think I am getting old I just remind myself that Julia Child starting cooking when she turned 37. So I still got a shot!

No Fail Smoothie

Everday Saturday morning my daughter and I start our day with a smoothie. No matter what horrible things we may put in our bodies throughout the rest of the day (cookies, butter, nutella from the jar, you get the picture)...I know we started off on the right track. My son used to join us...but he is boycotting smoothies right now. It happened after I snuck in some blueberries and ginger and used greek yogurt instead of his fave. He hasn't come back since.

This is our go to. If I have ginger, I use it. It's really good for you and I love the taste. I use about 1/2 teaspoon grated.

Having a helper is extremely important.

Eating yogurt from the container beforehand is also very important.

This little stinker turned 3 last weekend. Makes momma want to cry. It goes way to fast.

The recipe (kind of, you know I don't like to measure): This will make about 3 medium glasses the size that you see above. If you are making one for yourself only I would use 1/2-1 cup of fruit, 1/2 cup of yogurt and 1/4 to 1/2 cup of milk. (if you use fresh fruit add about some ice)

1-2 fresh or frozen bananas

1-2 cups of frozen strawberries (I like to use frozen fruit because I like creamy smoothies-frozen fruit means no ice)

1/2 cup (or so) of greek yogurt. If you like sweeter smoothies use Vanilla non-fat yogurt instead.

1/2 cup of Almond milk. Put this in first...it makes it easier to blend, add more if needed. You really can't screw this up.

*if you like or have ginger you can add about 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger.

Blend and eat. If it's difficult to blend add more milk and yogurt. Sometimes it can be if you use frozen fruit. This is a really thick and creamy smoothie...would make a good dessert too if you are watching what you eat.

The thing I love about smoothies is that there is no right or wrong way. If you use fresh fruit and it's tart, add some Agave Nectar to sweeten it up. Sorry for my absence lately. Life is crazy busy right now. I do have some good finds planned for this week though!

I have been infatuated with oxfords lately. I saw these months ago and have been trying to find something similar...these are Prada, and I'm quite certain make you feel like you are walking on rainbows and moonbeams or clouds or something. I however, do not have $690 laying around the house to use on a pair of shoes.

I do have $10 to blow on these. I found these and the ones in the previous post for a total of $13. Like my daughter says "that makes mommy happy". Both are leather, and FYI, both were found in the mens section. These could use a could polish, when my husband comes out of time out I think I'll make him do it.

I found my camera. It was returned to me about a week ago and I couldn't believe it, but it was still charged.

I'm holding this clown responsible for it. I know right. A girl using her favorite Toy Story video tape as a necklace would never commit such a hanus crime. Flava Flav!

It's National Thriftshop Day

I really forgot all about it, honest to God, I didn't remember until I looked at my calendar this afternoon. To no ones surprise, I found myself with 20 minutes to spare on my lunch hour. Here are the goodies.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw these. I had just walked in the door and the heavens opened and sunbeams were shining and there they were...all pretty, and white, and suede, and Bass, and MY SIZE! They were $3, and look like they have never been worn.

Might have to get some ribbon shoe-strings...they really deserve something better. Any ideas?

I have one of these already, but couldn't pass it up. It's a great book with tons of ideas. I will add it to my shop soon (I hope).

There was an older couple standing near this and I asked the man if he was getting it. He kind of laughed and shook his head no. It's an old tackle box or tool box. Can you see the ruler on top? It's metal and...has all those great compartments.

We'll call it the original "Caboodle". I paid $2 for it.

And finally, this vintage Liz Claiborne one piece. It's way too short for me, but I think it's super cute. It will definitely be in the shop soon. Sorry about the horrible pictures. My camera is missing (my 2 year old is suspect) so my phone has to do. At least the last one fuzzied out my tired no makeup face, and the fact that this one piece is way too small for me.

I Spy...

Sometimes I swear I can sniff out the good stuff. Like smelling a donut in bbq joint. Of course...when I say "good stuff" that is totally only my opinion...others I'm sure think I am nuts. I am a scanner...I can be in an out of a thrift store in 10 minutes. I can also easily spend an hour or more in one if I am in the zone. This is a little compilation of what I have acquired through lunch hour thrifting and a garage sale.

This little gem I thought was just a small suitcase. Once I opened it I knew I was cleary mistaken. I have never seen one and thought it was pretty neat. It's like a mobile bar.

It's hard to tell in these photos, my camera is terrible...but the right side holds bottles. As in liquor bottles. 3 of them to be exact. I don't have a huge need for it but for $3 I was down. Maybe I can fake it as my briefcase and take it work.

Moving on...from liquor to fabric.

I cannot get enough of florals. I am crazy about them. I found this fabric above thrifting.

Here is some heavy weight upholstery fabric I picked at a garage sale for a $1. Total score.

She had these towels too. She said they were her mothers. I love hearing things like that. I can imagine some sweet lady from the 50's or 60's taking such good care of her precious towels. I think we live in such a throw away world now (trust me I am not innocent either, I fed my kids lunch today on paper plates)...but I do feel a little less guilty using second hand items and wearing mostly vintage.

This embrodered pillow is actually a pillow case! Even has a zipper. Heaven. The last thing will have to wait for a photo. I'm tired, been working like crazy trying to get my house ready to sell. And, I have been waking up at ridiculous hours to ride my bike because my brother talked me into doing this. Remember this post? I found another one! I couldn't believe it either. I almost passed right by it too. The first thing I spotted was the blue label that said "made in Poland". I looked closer and sure enough it was another Burberry trench. This one is a big one, hoping it will fit my hubs. It had a little stain that came out in the wash and even had the lining. I have to pick up the lining from the dry cleaners yesterday. Oops. Anyone find anything good this week?

Garden Fresh Goodness

My husband called from work last week to tell me he was bringing home some tomatoes. Some garden fresh goodness. This was code for "go to the store and buy a couple pounds of bacon"...which of course I did. The mister's motto is "if you're gonna be a bear be a grizzly". He came home with a boxful. They were ripe and I knew we would never eat that many blt's. I thought I would try my hand at homeade tomato sauce. I looked at a couple recipes and then did what I do best. Throw crap together. He came home with a few zuchini squash as well...I added them too.

It turned out pretty darn good so I thought I would share. Remember, there is no right or wrong, substitute stuff, make it your own, taste often. Here's how it went down in my kitchen.

grocery:

Sauce:
10-12 super ripe tomatoes stolen from your neighbors garden (peeled) and roughly chopped
2 large onions (chopped)
2-3 large yellow zuchini squash (chopped)
5 cloves garlic (minced)
1/4 cup olive oil -or more
5 bay leaves
fresh basil
1/4 cup red cooking wine
a tablespoonish of white sugar
salt and pepper to taste
2 cans of tomato paste
2 packages of spaghetti seasoning

Prep: Chop the onions, squash, and garlic cloves. Peel the skin off the tomatoes and roughly chop them.

add 1/4 cup olive oil to a pan and once it's heated add the onions, squash and garlic. Cook the onions, squash and garlic down about 20 minutes, or until they are soft and opaque. This is where I had to switch from a large skillet to a large pot. Start adding the tomatos. Mine were huge chunks, which is fine they cook down. Add the tomato paste, the season packets, the wine, the bay leaves, a little salt and pepper, the sugar and simmer on low for a couple hours, or even just 30 minutes if that's all you have, stirring occasionaly. If you don't like a chunky sauce, put it in the blender and then let it cool. I blended mine so my kids would eat it. I left mine in the fridge for a day before I made the meatballs. If you like meatballs, these were pretty tasty too.

PS. Garnish with the fresh basil...or add it to the sauce at the end. I LOVE basil and could definitely over do it.

Meatballs:
1 pound ground beef
1 pound ground sausage
1 egg
1/4 cup ish of breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
1/4 cup of good cheese. I used shredded romano (it's what I had)...but you could use parm or mozzarella
a tbsp of minced garlic
1/8 to 1/4 cup of milk
salt and pepper
1 spaghetti seasoning packet
oil for pan.

mix everything but the oil together until you get a good meatball consistency, then make meatballs. Heat the oil and brown the outside. Add your meatballs to the warmed up sauce in a crockpot and cook 1/2 the day. We also added some our favorite italian sausage, browned and left to cook all the way through in the sauce. It was heavenly.

Hot tub time machine

I have such happy memories of these plastic little pools from childhood. Of course my son thought it looked lame, but ended up loving it. It's the little things in life.

Some of you are probably wondering why I would put this on my driveway. #1 I hate mosquitos, #2 no mud or grass in the pool, #3 it gets shade all day. As long as the kids don't get stooopid and try a triple double back flip...no one gets hurt, only minor dunking.

Vintage Sheets to Jumper

I found a cute little jumper at the DAV and knew it was going to be too small for my ginormous two year old...the voice of (un)reason in my head said buy it, and who am I to not listen to the voice in my head. I took it home, and used it as a guide to make another one out of vintage sheets.

I really must do a better job of measuring twice and cutting once, but quite frankly that's not how I roll. I had to make some minor adjustments but am overall happy with how it turned out. I call it my prototype, so the next one will hopefully be better.

The model was a little unruly and showed a bit of bad behavior. These were the best photos I could get. She also shows signs of being a diva. If she weren't so darn cute I might have to consider hiring another one. But she works for milk and cheese and gives the best hugs and kisses....so, i guess I'll give her another chance.

Das Booty

I cannot believe that I have reached 100 followers.

I have been thrifting and crafting since highschool and this little blog started because I wanted to share some of my fabs finds and little projects. And, since I don't scrapbook, it's also my way of watching my little ankle biters grow, and recording the mayhem of it all.

Sunday Funday

Wanna see something cute? Do ya? Cannot believe what I spotted today thrifting. The kids wanted to go to the toy store...it rained most of the day here...we compromised and went thrifting instead.

at first I thought it was just a cute little suitcase.

instead it was this adorable little picnic set.

this tablecloth has anthropolgie written all over it. The colors, the scalloped edges...it will be staying with me for a bit.

six crocheted place mats. I have been on the lookout for place mats so I was extra thrilled.

some pretty vintage fabric.

a sweet little painting. I love vintage paintings. I passed up a another one that I may have to go back and get if it stays on the brain. It was a hand painted...not so perfect and of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. The imperfections are what I adore.

and vintage sheets. My daughter needs clothes desperately so I have plans for these. Having plans and getting something accomplised are two totally different things though. Happy 4th everyone. Try to keep all your fingers. And remember, the black cats ignite much quicker than the red ones. I learned the hard way back in the day. Most likely it was my brothers fault.

Well, I have been called worse. I am not only addicted to thrift, but crochet as well. I am of course a hack, but have learned to follow a simple pattern. I am extemely proud of myself for that accomplisment too. I started knitting years ago and fell in love and was...yes...completley addicted to it as well. But, it took me years to get the patience to follow a pattern. Crochet for some reason seems a little less daunting.

Pinterest has made it super easy to find other fun blogs and crafters and patterns to keep any die hard crafter busy for eternity. I found the following tutorials on there, and I guess you could say...I'm hooked.

One of the tutorials is for hearts...you can find the pattern at Attic24. She is simply amazing, and apparently has a black belt in crochet. Her hearts look a lot more like hearts than mine...but I still adore them. Apparently I need more practice following a pattern.

And then I found this tutorial below for the cutest coasters on earth at Yvestown Blog. Super easy, and quick...I loves it.

I need a vaca

I need a vacation badly. Unfortunately we will have to reminisce of past vacations this summer. Two summers ago we packed up the car...the kids...and ourselves and drove almost 3000 miles in two weeks. It was amazing.

When I say "packed" i mean PACKED...our car.

From KC to St. Louis.

St. Louis to Louisville, KY

Louisville, KY to Asheville, NC (which by the way was my fave)

Word to your mother

I have been infatuated with making grown up friendship bracelets. All week I have been making the old school ones with embroidery thread. Will post on those soon.

I found myself back at the hardware store today buying more hexnuts for a project I did for a blog swap a while back with my sweet and beautiful cousin Shelley from Crazy Wonderful. I love making these so much I thought I would repost it on my own blog.

I found the tutorial over at Honestly WTF. It's a braided Hex Nut bracelet. The best part: it cost around $2, and takes less than 10 minutes, plus all supplies can be found at a hardware store, or in your hubby's toolbox.

Supplies: 3 strands of twine (you could even use leather) cut into 1 yard pieces

18 small brass hexnuts (but feel free to make it your own and use silver)

scissors

Gather the 3 strands and tie a not at the top, then braid it about an inch or so. I stuck a safety pin in my bed to hold it firm while braiding (do at your own risk).

Once you get a good inch or 2 braided, start incorporating the hex nuts.

Start with the strand on the left and holding the braid taught add a nut and push it to the base of braid. You'll want to hold that nut firmly in place.
Then crossover that strand.
Before joining the right side, add another nut, hold firmly then crossover.

Follow this with the remaining hex nuts, then finish with another inch or 2 of braid, tie another knot and you are finished. You can leave a long strand and tie it with a knot, or do what I did and find a nice clasp. I hate wearing jewelry at home. It's the first thing I take off when I enter the door...right before I put on my sweats.

This project was so fun and easy I made two. One out of small hexnuts, one out of the medium.

I enjoyed it so made much I did another one of their tutorials making "grown up" friendship bracelets. I am totally addicted. Here is the link to the other tutorial.

The top is an old bracelet I haven't worn in years. The bottom is an old gold chain from back in the day when I was a true gangsta.

If you do this second project with a small chain, use about 1/2 as much embroidery thread and instead of using a bobby pin to pull the strands through, use a small piece of embroidery thread tied around the two strands you are working with. It makes it much easier since a bobby pin won't fit through the small links.

Warning: just like friendship bracelets from the 80s, these are totally addicting and will have you remaking all your old jewelry.

I kept thinking I would cut the bottom off this black prairie dress and make it mini. I went ahead and posted it on Etsy...but still having second thoughts on keeping it and taking it up.

back to finding things in sets...I found all three of these 80's jackets on the same rack.

this is a royal blue Kasper for A.S.L. and would be super cute with black leggings. The pictures on the dress form just don't do them justice.

I am loving this double button white blazer.

Sorry about the photo quality. My camera has been dropped one too many times and my good/old camera eats through batteries like me through donuts. Not pretty. Happy Wednesday. Both of my kids have strep throat and I'm thinking about hitting up the redbox for a little movie marathon.

The first finds of this pretty purple collection was the round gem and one of the mid size square pieces. They were $1 a piece at a garage sale. I have one friend in particular I have to watch...she's already taken it once. I found the other 3 pieces a couple weeks ago for $4...total. They were filthy, but a little soft scrub cleaned them right up.

These have all been found at different times. I list the two bags on my Etsy page, but still not sure if I want to part with the sweet Amelia Earhart makeup case.

This one is the prize possession. It's a green Lady Baltimore...and it's PERFECT!

No, I have absolutely no idea why I need all this luggage. Yes, I adore it. Yes, I sell some of it. No, I cannot pass it up when thrifting. And no, this is not my entire collection.

So I was listening to my kids fighting and looking at some new blogs and found this one...http://blingandbones.blogspot.com/ and scrolled down and found these videos.
